What can you do right now?

Simple actions can help the ocean drastically. Scroll down to learn how.

What can you do right now?: Research

1. Recycling!

How does this help the ocean?

Recycling is one of the many ways to help the ocean and it is very simple. All you have to do is separate your plastic waste from the garbage waste. Typically, plastic ends up into the ocean through landfill, but we can prevent this from happening if the plastic does not even enter the landfill in the first place. Through recycling, the plastic is converted into usable material. This helps reduce plastic pollution and allow us to use plastic material to make items. Thus we are conserving the amount of plastic. It is known that even if a few families start recycling for even one month, they are already making a HUGE change to our ocean and the marine wildlife. So we encourage everyone to recycle!

2. Reduce your carbon footprint

*One's carbon footprint is a measure of how much carbon dioxide they are releasing into the atmosphere*

Apart from plastic pollution, the ocean is also suffering from ocean acidification, which is caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide. As a result of this, the ocean becomes more acidic which leads to the loss of corals. Additionally, this acidity also impacts the marine animals because their bodies are more suitable to functioning in a less acidic environment. We can prevent this by reducing our carbon footprint. Here are some ways how:

1. Drive less and take up more environmentally friendly ways of transportation, such as biking or walking. 2. Conserve water: This helps the ocean because less of our water will enter the ocean as runoff

3. Avoid wasting food: Buy what you will eat

4. Use less energy
