Welcome to the Ocean Conservancy Club! We are a club that is dedicated towards protecting the ocean and its marine wildlife from harm. Today, our oceans are suffering from plastic, pollution, trash ocean acidification, unsustainable fishing, and many other human-caused problems. Did you know that approximately 8 million tons of plastic is dumped in the ocean? Additionally, a recent study showed that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. The most devastating part of this is that we are to blame for this, for the thousands of marine animals dying each year, for the toxification of the ocean, so what’s the solution. After learning and researching, we decided that there needs to be a club on campus that is dedicated towards the issue. Our club got accepted in February of 2020 and our first meeting will be held in August of the school year of 2020-2021, due to COVID-19. So, how do we plan on helping the ocean? Our main goal as a club is to spread awareness, and by doing so, we will be teaching other students the horrors the ocean is facing and we will teach them how to utilize plastic in a safe, conservative way. Our second goal is to have fundraisers, where we will earn money and donate our profits to organizations that personally go into the ocean and remove the plastic and the trash. A few notable examples is 4Ocean, Ocean Conservancy, and MarAlliance. Lastly, we want to directly help the ocean through what we like to call taking actions, where we will take occasional trips to beaches to be able to remove the trash/plastic. This is the start of the Ocean Conservancy Club and we are excited to embark on this journey with you. Thank you!
